Status Go – Episode 72

#RaceinTechOK, I am a white host of a podcast, representing a predominately white company (InterVision) in an essentially white industry (tech). The last several weeks have forced me to confront my own inaction. In this episode, I sit down with Lamont Hatcher, CIO, and Wayne Patrick, CRO, both of AIS, an IT Managed Service company. We get honest and we get raw about their experience of being black in tech, being black in America, and being leaders of change.

If you are like me and want to learn and want to grow, you will want to listen. We cover aspects of their careers, how they persevered, and how they grew to be the leaders they are today. Lamont and Wayne also share some great insights for what we as tech leaders, as business leaders, and as human beings can do to turn the tide and make a difference.

Robin Fleming, ANVLRobin Fleming, CEO of Anvl, has the “distinct honor” of asking me the greatest question I have ever been asked while participating in a panel discussion. To know what that question was, you will have to listen to this episode. Of COURSE, there are more important reasons to listen to this episode.

Robin shares her amazing story of blue-collar beginnings in Arkansas, to tech roles, tech leadership, and now CEO of a SaaS company. Her story is guaranteed to give you goosebumps!

We discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on her business and her business’ customers. Anvl is a platform that enables companies to dramatically improve their safety programs and thus keep their team’s safer. Very applicable in today’s new world!

Our conversation also covers what it has been like for her in male-dominated industries (wood products, technology, safety) and the influence her mother had on her to go into a technology career.

Status Go – Episode 69

#StatusGo #AmplifyYourLeadershipIn our series on “What’s Next? Returning to the new normal”, Melanie Buergler and I discuss the challenges IT leaders are facing as we move from work-from-home orders back into our offices. Leaders must be considering four dimensions: customer, supply chain, employees, and self. In this episode, we focus on employees. How do you balance the needs of your employees with the needs of your business?

Our conversation covers work-life balance in a work-from-home world; fear of flying in today’s reality; those that are anxious to return to the office…and those that are not. You will find the conversation to be lively, insightful, and full of great actionable strategies to help any leader in these chaotic times.

Judd WilliamsStatus Go – Episode 68

Judd Williams has one of the coolest jobs in all of Information Technology. He is the CIO for the NCAA. Not only does he get to talk tech, he gets to do it while talking about sports! Earlier this year, I sat down to talk with Judd about the journey he and his team have been on over the last seven years and some of the cool apps they have developed for college sports.

As Judd describes it, the state of the IT department of the NCAA when he arrived was “aimless”. They were missing some key positions and were order-takers only. Now, seven years later they are an award winning IT department: Computer World’s Best Places to Work in IT three years running; Information Week’s Elite 100 and IDG’s Digital Edge 50.

Throughout our discussion, Judd shares his insights into leadership, technology, and business.

Status Go #AmplifyYourLeadershipStatus Go – Episode 67

I recently had the opportunity to interview a panel of amazing women who spend their days delivering AI, real world AI to their businesses and clients. These Superwomen of AI included:

Author, speaker and human capital advisor from USI, Lauren Grey Flanagan. Lauren is the author of 1001 Watts…and the person responsible for bringing this amazing group together.

Jana Fuelberth is the president of analytic.li, a company at the intersection of data-driven businesses and HR.

Nayeli Hernandez is a data analyst focused on human capital management for CarDon, owner and operator of senior living facilities throughout the midwest.

Allyson Jacobsen is the Global Marketing Director of Artificial Intelligence and Analytics Solutions at GE Healthcare.

Together we discussed their stories and the use cases they have implemented for AI. This discussion is packed with real world advice on how to get started with driving results through AI in your business.

We also addressed the elephant in the room…women in tech…what drew them to this career and what advice they would give to other women on this journey. Case in point. Weeks later I had the opportunity to meet a grad student who was interested in a career that combines healthcare, analytics and AI. I reached out to this group to ask if they would meet with her. The responses came back within hours. YES! Each one a yes! That is putting action behind their words!

Status Go #AmplifyYourLeadershipStatus Go – Episode 65

I’ve known Andy for a number of years and had countless conversations. This one was one of the best. In this episode we talk, not only of Andy’s first six weeks as CIO of a non-profit, but also, his decision to relocate from Indianapolis to Austin to take the position. As he states “where we grow the most is where we are uncomfortable”.

During his recent job search, he reached out to over 200 CIOs and senior IT leaders. Of these, over ⅓ accepted his connection request. That is a great example of building a powerful professional network.

Once he arrived in Austin, the work began. Take a listen to this episode. Andy will take you on his journey and share some of the lessons learned along the way!

#AmplifyYourLeadershipStatus Go – Episode 64

Nurse to health care informatics to life coach and enneagram guide, our guest in this episode, Rachel Pritz, has taken an unusual path. The meat of this episode is about the enneagram, what it is, what it does, and what it means for your leadership, however we do spend time on her career journey. I think it is an important part of understanding the insights Rachel shares.

After taking us on this journey, Rachel digs into the enneagram using her own growth as an example. One of the insights she shares, that may be a surprise to many, is IT professionals are hungry for personal growth, sharing their stories and developing as leaders. In short, building their soft skills.

Discover the “why” behind your behaviors. Her call to action is a challenge we all should take!

As our guest, Warren Lenard says, “it is at the same time a cliche…and table stakes.” Warren, the CIO of Byrider, provides some great insights into his first 30 days, his first 90 days as a CIO.

Our discussion revolves around six key topics every IT leader needs to take into account in their first days on the job: Change for the sake of change; The past is the past; People; First Team; Landmines; and, Process and procedure. Whether you are a first time CIO, a veteran starting with a new organization, or you’ve been in the job for quite some time, you will gain some new insights!

Not a CIO? Much of what we discuss applies to leaders in all areas of business and life!

Status Go – Episode 62

Ask any CIO what keeps them up at night and they are likely to respond with security. Even if it is not the first answer, it will undoubtedly be in the top three or four of their priorities. In fact, once the dramatic rush to a remote, work from home, workforce was over, attention turned to, you guessed it, security. Today, In this episode I sat down with one of the top thought leaders in the cyber security space, J.R. Tietsort, chief information security officer for DarkTrace, a company pioneering the use of AI in cyber security.

JR’s approach to cyber security is very pragmatic: it is a balancing act between security and revenue; between security and productivity. He covers his perspective of the cyber security stack and the role that AI can play in each layer of the stack. He also provides insights into the application of AI and the maturity progression many companies follow in their implementations of the technology.

Future of WorkOur world changed dramatically. Our work changed dramatically. 2020 and COVID-19 will be remembered by history as the year that everything changed…again. Remote work has been thrust upon us, ready or not, like it or not. The future of work is now! Our guest in this episode, best selling author, Charlie Araujo has been writing and more importantly thinking about the future of technology and the future of work for years. When we spoke to Charlie on this program last year, we discussed Humanness in this Digital Era. His blog post a couple weeks ago really jumped out at me. The post was titled “Why your WFH choices you make now will determine your digital era future”. The post was powerful, like all of Charlie’s writing.

Charlie and I cover several aspects of this new WFH (work from home) world and what it means for the technology professional today and tomorrow. Charlie challenges us all to do a better job of connecting the dots of the physical and digital worlds.
